One of my favorite BPD experts, Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, PhD from About.com, shares some insights as to whether or not you should tell someone that you have borderline personality disorder. The link to the article is provided below:

I thinik that it depends on th person and what part they play in your life.
All my close friends know about my BPD, even though they don’t always understand it.
But, as far as my son’s friends’ moms, I don’t.
There is still such a stigma attached to it unfortunately and I don’t want my mental isssues to affect his life. I think it does already why should he lose friends because people are ignorant, ya know?
I personally have lost friends because of my honesty and it’s the reason that we need to try and end stigma.
I don’t hide it(eg my myspace page and emails, but I don’t tell everyone.)

I’ve always told everyone that I’ve met (after awhile of course) that I have BPD along with other mental illnesses. I like to just get it out there and be honest. I also don’t feel like its not something to be ashamed of so why hide it? Take me as I am or don’t take me at all.
